FCA was founded in 1968 by Pastors Milton and Patricia Koonce of Truth Tabernacle in Channelview, Texas. The church and school campus was located near the site where General Santa Anna was captured during the Battle of San Jacinto for Texas independence. The church school began with one kindergarten class of 16 students. It was during these days of small beginnings that Mrs. Koonce played the roles of principal, teacher, and janitor at the same time. The first desks were made of old doors for desk tops and many creative applications were implemented to fulfill the needs. Marketing the school to the public was quite a task. Mrs. Koonce would call every family in the small Channelview phone directory to let them know about the school. Finding the school's location was so difficult that Mrs. Koonce drew and distributed maps for those interested in enrolling.
In 1983, the church and school moved to a new facility on Woodforest Blvd. in Channelview, Texas. Each school year, a new grade level would be added as enrolled families did not want their children to leave the wonderful Christian environment and curriculum provided. Thus, a new building program was undertaken to include a two-story classroom building and a gymnasium for athletics.
With the school and church continuing to grow, a second new property was purchased and a new building was built at East Beltway 8 and Woodford Drive. In October of 1992, just four weeks after the new building was opened to the public, a powerful tornado destroyed the whole building. This created a difficult setback having to move all students to the older smaller facility. Through steadfast faith and a determined spirit not to let the vision die, Channelview Christian Center was rebuilt larger and better than before.
In 1996, Channelview Christian School earned full accreditation through the International Christian Accrediting Association and graduated its first senior class.
In the summer of 2003, the school's name was changed from Channelview Christian School to Family Christian Academy.
Today, Family Christian Academy serves approximately 300 students from K3 through 12th grade with a committed staff of over 25 members. FCA has graduated 14 senior classes and continues to make a Godly impact in the surrounding community and various nations across the world.
